i have a love/hate relationship with tattoos. some of them i love. some of them are hideous. i like the stories behind tattoos. i hate when the stories are lame. you know those stories like, “i went to Panama City and everyone else down there was getting one so I got this coffee mug tattooed on my calf.” that’s stupid. i have been thinking about getting a tattoo for a while and recently Callie and i were talking about it. she doesn’t like them. bummer. i told her what i wanted for a tattoo and she thought about it for a while and still hasn’t given me the answer i want yet.
now there’s a big debate between people to profess to be Christians about whether or not Christians should have tattoos. it’s being discussed in schools. it’s being broadcast on television. it’s being wrote about in blogs. there have been series done at churches about tattoos. there are even a few people at Freedom that have tattoos. all that to say, tattoos are a big deal in culture and in the realm of Christianity right now.
i personally have no problem with tattoos. some of them look really cool. some of them look really stupid. i love watching Miami Ink. i just think tattoos are cool - but in moderation. for instance, i was flipping through the channels last night and WWE Monday Night Raw was on. one of the wrestlers, Santino Marella, has the face of a lion tattooed on his entire back. trust me, it looks dumb. completely dumb.
if i were to get a tattoo, i would get a Chi Rho symbol. i don’t exactly know where i would get it yet, but i know that is what i would get. the meaning behind the symbol is pretty interesting too.
so all of this to say… what do you think about tattoos? do you have a tattoo? what does it mean? when did you get it? what’s the story behind it? comment on it…

I said the tattoo on the finger was okay. I think I would be okay with the other tattoo if it was somewhere on your back. I just don’t think I would want you to get one on your forearm. We’ll talk about it somemore.
Comment by Callie April 15, 2008 @ 12:17 pmi dont have a problem with tattoos either. i have Yahweh in hebrew on my left wrist. a bunch of guys from my high school small group all wanted to get this tattooed on our wrists when we were in college, but only 2 of us did. myself and my friend. i like it because people always ask what it means and it gives me a chance to talk to them about God and Christ. therefor, tattoos are a tool to spread the gospel. ever think of it that way?
Comment by Tyler Orr April 15, 2008 @ 2:15 pmTatoos are stupid and gay and anyone who has one is a big idiot. I have a band of blue fire on my upper left arm. I want more tatoos.
Comment by bootgun April 15, 2008 @ 5:04 pmI think if you want one get it. I think the argument by christians saying the bible says not to, are the same people(women) who need to be asked why they cut their hair, because the bible says not to do that too. People read and make truth of their own out of the bible instead of really reading the bible for the truth that it is.
With that said, I don’t have one, I do one two. One on my right forearm and one on my left wrist. On my left wrist I want a square block filled in with the only thing not filled in is the two hebrew letters that stand for N and A, with that standing for, Never Abandoned. I have a deep passion and brokenness in my heart for young people who deal with depression, cutting, eating disorders, and most of them feel abandoned. I just want them to know, they’re not.
My second I just want a cross on my right forearm.

Comment by vagabondrunn April 15, 2008 @ 5:47 pmLet me make one thing clear, I was not singling out women in my previous comment. Just making a point of what scripture says that people don’t do.
[how do i fix that...hmm] Men are jerks!
Comment by vagabondrunn April 15, 2008 @ 5:49 pmi have no problem with tattoos! and i agree that the people who are agruing whether or not you should have a tattoo as a Christian are not reading scripture for the truth that is in it!You know all the verses and if you really study those verses there is a WAY depeer meaning than don’t get a tattoo. in the words of louie giglio “i feel God is more interested in what is in your heart, whan whether or not you have a tattoo” i agree people who get them just to get them and have to real point or puropse behind it that is stupid. But when it is something that has a story or message you can share i think its cool! I love the show Miami ink as well, and you have been thinkin about this for awhile! if you really really want one, and 20 yrs from now you don’t think you’ll regret it, i don’t see why not!
Comment by brittney April 16, 2008 @ 1:47 amI want to clarify one thing…I have no problem with tattoos at all. I don’t have one only because I can’t think of anything that I’d want on my body for the rest of my life. If I got a tattoo it would be just to get a tattoo and I agree that that is stupid. Maybe one day something of significance will really urge me to get a tattoo.
Comment by Callie April 16, 2008 @ 2:19 amI don’t have a problem with tattoos and the ones I have I got for a reason. If you’d like to learn more about tattoos and “Miami Ink,” visit my blog: http://www.victoriasrighthip.typepad.com/
